Best Practices in Physical Activity Programming for Older Adults: Lessons Learned

In 2002, NCOA's Center for Healthy Aging and its partners The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign conducted a national competition to find best practice physical activity programs for older adults.  In addition to extensive telephone interviews, the top ten programs were visited by members of the project team.  Throughout the process a number of lessons were learned about how to implement a successful community-based physical activity program for older adults.  This document briefly summarizes the key findings from the competition and the subsequent site visits.  For more information about the competition, please visit: www.healthyagingprograms.org/resources/BP_physicalactivity.pdf.
